A 19th-century church in Union Springs has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, the National Park Service confirmed on March 14 following a state nomination process.
The First Presbyterian Church of Springport, built in 1840 and now home to the Frontenac Historical Society and Museum, was recognized for its rural Greek Revival architecture. Designed by local architect John Hagaman, the building features distinctive column capitals inspired by ancient Athens.
Museum board members spent nearly two years researching and refining their application. The designation not only honors the church’s history but also opens the door to potential federal preservation funding.
