Tage Thompson reached the 40-goal mark for the second time in his career as the Buffalo Sabres edged the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-2, in a shootout on Saturday night at KeyBank Center.
Jason Zucker netted the equalizer early in the third period, capitalizing on a power play rebound to tie the game 2-2. In the shootout, Jack Quinn and Alex Tuch both converted to lift Buffalo (33-36-6), who has won six of their last seven games. Goaltender James Reimer made 22 saves in regulation and overtime.
Brayden Point and Gage Goncalves found the back of the net for the Lightning (44-26-6), who had already clinched a playoff spot earlier in the day following the New York Rangers’ win over the New Jersey Devils. Goalie Jonas Johansson turned aside 36 shots.
The Sabres will have a quick turnaround as they will host the Boston Bruins on Sunday at 6 p.m., looking to push their win streak to four.
