REAL ID deadline 2025: How to apply before May 7

U.S. travelers have just over a month left to ensure they’re ready for a major change. Starting May 7, 2025, anyone over the age of 18 will need a REAL IDor another TSA-approved form of identification — to board domestic flights or access certain federal buildings.

If you haven’t updated your driver’s license or state-issued ID, here’s everything you need to know to avoid last-minute stress.

What Is a REAL ID?

REAL ID is a federal requirement that sets stricter standards for identification. Passed as part of the REAL ID Act of 2005, the law aims to improve national security by creating more secure state-issued IDs. Beginning May 7, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer accept standard licenses for boarding domestic flights.

Do You Need a REAL ID?

You’ll need a REAL ID — or one of the following TSA-approved documents — to board a plane or enter certain secure federal facilities:

  • Valid U.S. passport
  • Enhanced driver’s license (EDL)
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (e.g., Global Entry, NEXUS)
  • Military ID or Department of Defense ID
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Tribal-issued photo ID
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Veteran Health Identification Card
  • Employment Authorization Document (I-766)

If you already have one of these, a REAL ID is not required for domestic travel.

What About Enhanced Licenses?

New York also offers Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs), which are valid for domestic flights and can also be used to re-enter the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean. Unlike REAL IDs, Enhanced Licenses have an American flag icon, while REAL IDs display a black circle with a white star.

If you already have an EDL, you do not need to apply for a REAL ID.

What Happens if You Don’t Have a REAL ID by May 7?

If you try to fly domestically after May 7 without a REAL ID or other accepted form of ID, you will be denied boarding. You also won’t be able to access certain federal buildings, such as military bases and nuclear facilities.

How to Get a REAL ID in New York

To apply, you must visit a New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in person. The application process cannot be completed online.

You’ll need to bring documents that prove your:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Two proofs of New York State residency
  • Lawful status in the U.S.

Examples of accepted documents include your current NY driver’s license or ID, recent utility bills, bank statements, pay stubs, or a passport. Make sure none of the documents are older than one year.

Use the DMV Document Guide to see exactly what you need.

How Much Does a REAL ID Cost?

The REAL ID itself is free, but you will have to pay standard DMV transaction fees for license or ID renewal, replacement, or upgrade.

What Does a REAL ID Look Like?

Look for the black circle with a white star in the top right corner of your new ID. This indicates compliance with federal REAL ID standards. Enhanced IDs feature a small American flag instead.

Bottom Line

Don’t wait until the last minute. If you plan to fly within the U.S. or visit federal facilities after May 7, 2025, and don’t have a passport or Enhanced License, now is the time to apply for a REAL ID. Visit your local DMV with the required documents to avoid travel headaches this spring.
