  • Staff Report

Steuben County residents will have a chance to safely dispose of unneeded medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the Steuben Prevention Coalition Opioid Committee will collect expired or unwanted prescription drugs at the Public Safety Building in Bath. The event is part of a national effort led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Sheriff Jim Allard stressed the importance of the event for household safety. “This is a great way to help keep your home safe from theft and your children safe from unintended use,” he said. “Opioid safety is everyone’s business.”

Take Back Day accepts tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid prescription medications. The service is free and anonymous. Organizers say the goal is to prevent drug misuse and protect the environment through safe disposal practices.

Since its inception, the national initiative has removed more than 9,000 tons of medications from homes across the country.

The drop-off site is located at 7007 Rumsey Street Extension in Bath. For more information or to find additional collection locations, visit www.DEATakeBack.com or steubenpreventioncoalition.org.
