Penn Yan woman arrested for DWI after early-morning traffic stop

  • Staff Report

A Penn Yan woman was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning after police say she was driving under the influence with a broken headlight.

Crystal E. Hamm, 40, was pulled over around 2:27 a.m. on March 29 while driving on Lawrence Street in the village. Officers observed that her vehicle had a non-functioning headlight and initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop, Penn Yan Police reported that Hamm showed multiple signs of intoxication. She was given a series of standardized field sobriety tests, which police say she failed.

Hamm was taken into custody and transported to the Yates County Jail, where she submitted to a chemical breath test. Her blood alcohol content was measured at .15%, nearly twice the legal limit.

She was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or higher, and operating a vehicle with no or inadequate headlights. Hamm was processed at the Penn Yan Police Department and released with traffic tickets. She is scheduled to appear in Penn Yan Village Court at a later date.
