Major Blair Construction expansion in Auburn to come before City Council this week

  • Staff Report

The Auburn City Council will meet this Thursday to discuss a significant building expansion proposed by Blair Construction & Fabrication at its North Street location, which includes a roughly 9,240-square-foot addition and other site improvements.

The council will review the site plan application that previously faced delays due to outstanding concerns regarding drainage, fire safety, and landscaping requirements. The proposed expansion, located at 284 North Street, would add a large pre-engineered metal building intended for additional workspace, along with expanded parking capacity.

The Auburn Planning Board previously tabled this application in March after requesting additional information on whether the new structure would be sprinklered, concerns which were clarified by the applicant, who noted sprinklers were not planned due to the building’s design. Additionally, city staff is currently exploring if Blair Construction can comply with landscaping requirements by donating trees to the city instead of planting them on-site due to the gravel surface at the existing lot.

The application includes detailed drainage reports indicating minimal expected impact from runoff, as the proposed development mirrors existing conditions and drainage patterns.

At Thursday’s meeting, councilors will decide whether to grant final approval or require further amendments. The Planning Board’s recommendation is expected to significantly influence the council’s final decision.

The council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Auburn’s Memorial City Hall, located at 24 South Street. Public comments will be heard during the meeting.
