State vows changes after viral squirrel euthanasia

Public backlash followed the state’s decision to euthanize a famous pet squirrel, and now New York officials say they’re taking a hard look at how such cases are handled, according to the Elmira Star-Gazette.

Last fall, wildlife officers seized “Peanut,” a squirrel with nearly a million Instagram followers, and a raccoon from Pine City resident Mark Longo. Both animals were euthanized for rabies testing after an alleged bite incident—though tests came back negative. Longo, who founded a local animal sanctuary, called the response excessive.

DEC’s acting commissioner admitted the agency mishandled the situation and pledged new oversight, including a leadership role focused on public protection.
