The New York Yankees kicked off the season with a thrilling 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, securing their fourth consecutive Opening Day victory.
Holding a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth, the Yankees turned to closer Devin Williams for his team debut. Facing his former club, Williams encountered some trouble, allowing a run on two hits and a walk. However, despite a 36-pitch outing he managed to escape with the save.
Austin Wells made history with a leadoff home run in the first, becoming the first catcher ever to accomplish that feat on Opening Day. Anthony Volpe followed with a second-inning homer, making him the second-youngest Yankee to do so in a season opener. Aaron Judge contributed an RBI double, while Cody Bellinger added a hit and a sacrifice fly in his Yankees debut.
Making his second career Opening Day start, Carlos Rodón delivered a solid performance, allowing just one run on four hits over 5.1 innings while striking out seven and walking two. The bullpen trio of Tim Hill, Mark Leiter Jr., and Luke Weaver kept Milwaukee off the board.
After a day off Friday, the Yankees and Brewers will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
