Dems look to move past Schumer backlash

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing one of the toughest political storms of his career after advancing a Republican spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. His decision drew sharp criticism from fellow Democrats, especially progressives, and his favorability ratings took a major hit.

Despite initial outrage, many congressional Democrats are signaling a desire to move on and refocus on Republican policies that could impact key programs like Medicaid. However, some, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal, believe new leadership is needed. Schumer insists he will not step down, arguing that a shutdown would have been far worse.

While the backlash has softened, it may still affect upcoming Democratic primaries. Some potential Senate candidates are already calling for fresh leadership, indicating Schumer’s challenges are far from over.
