Canada updates U.S. travel rules, adds registration requirement

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Canada has updated its travel guidance, requiring Canadians staying in the U.S. for over 30 days to register with U.S. authorities starting April 11. The rule, based on a Trump-era executive order, had previously been inconsistently enforced.

Failure to comply could result in fines or misdemeanor charges. While most Canadians will not need to provide fingerprints, travelers are urged to check U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services guidelines. Other foreign nationals must also follow the rule.

The update follows rising U.S.-Canada tensions, with other nations like the U.K. and Germany also issuing travel warnings after visitor detentions. The policy change underscores evolving immigration enforcement under Trump’s administration.
