SUNY Cortland to host 2025 NYS Envirothon as students tackle climate challenges

High school students from across New York will gather at SUNY Cortland on May 28 and 29 for the 2025 NYS Envirothon, a statewide environmental competition that tests knowledge and problem-solving skills on pressing ecological issues.

This year’s competition focuses on “Forest Stewardship in the Adirondack Park,” challenging students to create policy-driven solutions to manage one of the state’s largest ecosystems. Acting as aides to the New York State Governor’s Office, teams will develop plans to address climate change impacts, respond to natural disasters, and sustain forest health in the Adirondacks.

The Envirothon brings together top teams from local competitions held across the state. In 2024, the event hosted 41 teams and over 250 students, with The Mount Academy of Ulster County taking first place. The competition is run by volunteers from conservation groups, including local conservation districts, NYS Ag & Markets, and the USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Organizers are calling for sponsors and volunteers to help support the event. Businesses and individuals can contribute through donations or in-kind support, such as snacks and event gear. Volunteers can sign up for roles ranging from timekeeping to trail guiding, with perks including a free t-shirt, popcorn, and ice cream.
