The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be on alert for a growing scam that preys on computer users with fake virus alerts.
According to a recent public advisory, scammers are using pop-up messages that claim a virus has infected the user’s device. The messages often urge people to click a link or call a fake support number—tactics designed to trick victims into handing over remote access to their computer.
Once access is granted, scammers can steal personal information, access online accounts, or install malware. In some cases, they may try to sell bogus services to “fix” the issue.
Officials advise residents to avoid clicking any links in suspicious emails or pop-up messages. They also stress the importance of never sharing passwords or allowing unknown individuals to control your computer.
Anyone who has given a scammer access is encouraged to contact a trusted person or their local law enforcement agency for help.
