Smith Metal Works in Newark is celebrating 80 years in business, having grown from a farm repair shop in 1945 to a major manufacturer of salt spreaders used nationwide, according to WayneTimes.com. The company was founded by Wilbur F. Smith and is now led by his son, Wayne.
The family-run operation, now with 20 employees, continues to innovate—most recently adding laser cutting technology to boost efficiency and expand into new fabrication work. Despite industry changes, the company still services parts for decades-old equipment.
With three generations of families working in the shop, Smith Metal remains a local fixture. An open house is planned for July 17 to showcase its history and capabilities.
