Seneca Falls residents will have a chance to clean out their homes—and help neighbors in need—during a new three-day community event aimed at cutting down on landfill waste.
The SwapCycle event, scheduled for April 11 to 13, invites residents to set unwanted but still usable household items at the curb for others to claim. Organizers say the effort is both a money-saver for struggling households and an environmentally responsible alternative to throwing items away.
Participants are encouraged to register their items online at the Seneca Housing website before placing them curbside after 5:00 p.m. on April 11. Items can then be picked up by others throughout Saturday and Sunday. Unclaimed goods will be collected by the town on Monday, April 14 during the designated Bulk Waste Pickup Day. Seneca Meadows will receive the remaining waste at no cost to the town.
“This is not a household cleanup event,” organizers emphasized. Only items in good working order and usable condition will be accepted. A wide range of materials are explicitly banned from the event, including broken appliances, hazardous materials, industrial or radioactive waste, and damaged furniture. Refrigeration units, air conditioners, batteries, and any suspicious or unrecognizable items are also prohibited.
Town officials hope the effort will not only reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills but also build a stronger sense of community by encouraging residents to share resources. The initiative comes at a time when many families are looking for ways to stretch their budgets and reduce expenses.
