Savage Pet has issued a recall for its Savage Cat Food Chicken in both large and small box sizes due to potential contamination with H5N1, commonly known as bird flu. The FDA published the recall announcement on March 15, 2025, warning pet owners about possible health risks for cats and humans.

Health Risks for Cats & Humans in Savage Pet

The H5N1 virus can be dangerous for both cats and humans if exposed. While no confirmed human infections from raw pet food have been reported, the FDA advises caution when handling the recalled product.

If your cat has consumed the recalled product, watch for the following signs:

  • Fever & lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Red or inflamed eyes
  • Eye and nose discharge
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Neurological symptoms (tremors, seizures, lack of coordination, blindness)

If your cat exhibits any of these symptoms, contact a veterinarian immediately.

What Led to the Recall?

  • February 2025: A cat in Colorado tested positive for H5N1 after consuming Savage Cat Food. Colorado State University tested the product using PCR testing, which yielded “non-negative” results.
  • March 6, 2025: The National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) conducted further virus isolation tests and found the results to be negative for live virus.
  • March 13, 2025: Another case was reported in New York, where a kitten fed from the recalled lot also tested positive for avian flu. Additional testing is ongoing.
  • March 15, 2025: Savage Pet expanded its voluntary market withdrawal to a full recall for safety.
