REPORT: Cayuga County prisons lose 200 officers

  • Staff Report

A Cayuga County legislator revealed that 200 correction officers lost their jobs at Auburn and Cayuga correctional facilities following a statewide strike, according to new reporting by The Citizen.

The firings were part of a dismissal of 2,000 officers who failed to return to work by the state’s March 10 deadline.

The strike, which began Feb. 17 over unsafe prison conditions, saw 90% of officers walk out. Despite mediation efforts, many refused to return, leading to mass terminations.

Gov. Kathy Hochul later barred state agencies from rehiring the fired officers.
