Governor Hochul spotlights New York’s booming maple industry during Maple Month

Governor Kathy Hochul is urging New Yorkers to support local maple producers as the state celebrates Maple Month, highlighting the industry’s economic and cultural significance. With Maple Weekends set for March 22-23 and March 29-30, residents can experience the syrup-making process firsthand and enjoy farm-fresh products.

New York ranks second in the nation for maple production, with a surge in output to 846,000 gallons in 2024—nearly 100,000 gallons more than the previous year. Recognizing the industry’s potential, Hochul’s FY26 Executive Budget proposes additional funding for research and marketing, aiming to position New York as a leader in maple innovation.

“As the first agricultural crop of the year, the maple season provides a sweet way to usher in New York’s delicious harvest season,” said Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball. “Thanks to our dedicated maple producers, New York continues to be a top maple producer, contributing tremendously to our local communities and economies.”

Shadow Hill Maple Farm in Wayne County hosted the state’s annual tree tapping event, emphasizing the importance of supporting local maple businesses. The farm, part of the NYS Grown & Certified program, will be open every weekend in March for tastings and tours. More than 100 producers statewide participate in the program, which promotes food safety and environmental sustainability.

Beyond Maple Weekends, Taste NY Markets and regional welcome centers are offering maple-themed promotions, including giveaways and product discounts. Educational exhibits will also be featured at locations like the Adirondacks Welcome Center, showcasing the evolution of syrup production.

Governor Hochul’s administration continues to support the industry through state-backed initiatives, including research at Cornell University’s Maple Program and the expansion of land leases for sap collection. The FY26 budget earmarks more than $400,000 for marketing and research to further boost New York’s maple sector.
