Bills bring back RB Ty Johnson on 2-year contract

Ty Johnson is staying with the Buffalo Bills, signing a two-year contract worth $5 million, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

This marks Johnson’s third season with the team and a pay raise from his previous one-year, $1.29 million contract.

Despite rookie Ray Davis joining the backfield alongside James Cook, Johnson remained productive in 2024, recording 497 scrimmage yards, a jump from 194 yards in 2023. He averaged an impressive 15.8 yards per catch on 18 receptions, highlighted by a standout five-catch, 114-yard game against the Detroit Lions. Johnson totaled four receiving touchdowns in the regular season and added another in the playoffs.

The 27-year-old contributed 213 rushing yards on 41 carries, proving his value even as Cook approaches a contract extension. With Davis still on his rookie deal, the Bills’ backfield appears set for the upcoming season.

Johnson’s best season came in 2021 with the Jets when he recorded 610 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. After being waived by the Lions in 2020, the Jets picked him up, but he was released in 2023. The Bills quickly signed him, and he has since become a key depth piece in Buffalo’s offense.
