Seneca Falls police warn residents of rising job scam tactics

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The Seneca Falls Police Department is warning residents to be on high alert for job scams that trick victims into paying upfront costs for fake employment opportunities.

Scammers are posing as legitimate companies, offering fraudulent job positions and demanding payment for training, background checks, or supplies. In some cases, they even send fake checks, instructing victims to use the funds to purchase supplies from a so-called “preferred supplier.” Once the victim pays, the scammer’s check bounces—leaving them without money or a job.

Warning signs of a job scam

Authorities urge job seekers to be cautious and watch for these red flags:

  • Upfront payments – Legitimate employers do not ask employees to pay before starting work.
  • Fake checks – If a company sends you a check and instructs you to use it for supplies or expenses, it’s likely a scam.
  • Required purchases from a specific supplier – Scammers often pressure victims to buy supplies from a company of their choosing.
  • No formal interview process – Be wary of job offers that require little to no vetting.
  • Unprofessional communication – Legitimate companies conduct hiring through official channels, not personal emails or messaging apps.

Police remind residents that no real employer will ask you to pay to get a job and advise anyone who suspects a scam to trust their instincts.

Victims of job fraud are encouraged to report incidents to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov to help prevent others from falling victim.
