Daylight saving time begins tonight: Don’t forget to check your smoke alarms

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

As clocks spring forward for daylight saving time tonight, fire officials are reminding residents to use the time change as an opportunity to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Daylight saving time officially begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, meaning clocks should be set forward one hour before going to bed Saturday night. While this shift means losing an hour of sleep, it also brings longer daylight hours in the evening.

Fire department urges safety checks

The Clifton Springs Fire Department is urging residents to take a few moments to ensure their homes are protected against fire and carbon monoxide dangers. Here are their key safety reminders:

  • Smoke alarms with 10-year non-replaceable batteries should last for a decade, but if the alarm chirps due to a low battery, the entire unit needs to be replaced.
  • Smoke alarms with traditional batteries require fresh batteries at least once a year. If an alarm is chirping, replace the battery immediately.
  • Use the correct batteries recommended by the alarm’s manufacturer. The wrong type may prevent the alarm from working properly.

Routine smoke alarm and CO detector maintenance is crucial for home safety. Fire officials emphasize that working alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.

A good time for household safety checks

In addition to changing clocks and checking smoke alarms, daylight saving time is also a good reminder to:

  • Review emergency escape plans with family members.
  • Check flashlights and emergency supplies.
  • Replace expired items in first aid kits.

The Clifton Springs Fire Department and other safety officials stress that a few simple steps can help protect homes and save lives.
