GIRLS BASKETBALL: Second-half scoring drought costs Mynderse in season-ending loss to Hornell

The Mynderse girls’ basketball team was 16 minutes away from pulling off a stunning upset in the Class B1 Final on Friday night at Finger Lakes Community College. However, a prolonged second-half scoring drought proved costly, as the Blue Devils fell 36-27 to Hornell, bringing their season to an end.

Eighth-seeded Mynderse (11-13) held a slim 23-22 advantage at the break, but their offense stalled completely in the third quarter, allowing third-seeded Hornell (19-3) to take control. The scoring drought stretched deep into the fourth quarter and lasted 11 minutes and 15 seconds before Eden Prayne finally ended it with a pair of free throws. Mynderse managed just two more points the rest of the way, courtesy of Hannah O’Brien’s putback. The Blue Devils were outscored 14-4 in the second half.

Peyton Verkey knocked down three three-pointers in the first 16 minutes but was held scoreless the rest of the way. O’Brien finished second in scoring with six points, while Prayne and Alessandra Nigro split eight points. Chelsea Korzeniewski and Reese Markel were held to just two points each.

With the win, Hornell advances to face Lyons in the Class B regional qualifier next week.
