House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the Republican budget plan, citing a Congressional Budget Office report that says it would require cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. He called the proposal the largest Medicaid cut in U.S. history and accused Republicans of targeting social safety net programs.
The GOP-backed budget includes $4.5 trillion in tax breaks and $2 trillion in spending cuts, with $880 billion slashed from Medicaid. House Democrats unanimously opposed the plan, arguing it violates the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act passed last year.
Jeffries also pushed back against the GOP’s proposal to extend current government funding levels through 2025, warning it could lead to Republicans acting alone on budget matters. A government shutdown looms if Congress fails to pass an appropriations bill by March 14.
