The 2025 tax season is off to a slow start, with the IRS reporting a 7.7% drop in filings compared to last year. Despite delays, refunds are being issued steadily, with early filers seeing quick direct deposit payments.
As of February 7, the average federal tax refund was $2,065—an 18.6% increase from 2024. Taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit can receive their refunds within one to two weeks. However, those claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit may face delays, with refunds expected by March 3.
To check refund status, taxpayers can use the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool, which updates for most filers by February 22. Filing early and online remains the fastest way to receive a refund.
