A routine traffic stop in the Village of Weedsport led to the arrest of a Geneva man on drug-related charges, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office announced.
According to Sheriff Brian Schenck, deputies stopped a vehicle on February 9 at approximately 11:04 p.m. after noticing it was operating without a front New York State license plate. The driver and sole occupant was identified as 40-year-old Michael R. Costello.
During the stop, deputies conducted a search of both Costello and the vehicle, discovering a quantity of Methylphenidate pills—a Schedule II controlled substance—for which he did not have a prescription. Authorities also found a scale commonly used for weighing illegal substances.
Costello was taken into custody and transported to the Public Safety Building, where he was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. He was also issued traffic tickets related to the stop.
Costello was released on appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Village of Weedsport Court on February 24 at 7 p.m.
