Hobart and William Smith Colleges have received the largest gift in their history, a $70 million donation from Trustee Chair Emeritus L. Thomas Melly ’52, L.H.D. ’02, and Judith Hershey Melly L.H.D. ’16. The transformative contribution will expand student access, enhance academic excellence, and support innovation across the institution.
The gift, finalized last fall, was announced by HWS President Mark D. Gearan. It ranks among the largest donations to a college or university in 2024.
“It is my hope that this gift will make the future bright for Hobart and William Smith,” Melly said in a December interview. “I want to put this money to good use to benefit students who need it. I believe in the leadership of Hobart and William Smith and in the vision that Mark Gearan has created. That kind of leadership warrants our support.”

Sadly, Melly passed away in December, but Gearan emphasized that the Colleges will honor his intent and recognize the deep commitment he and his wife made to their alma mater.
The Mellys’ donation will directly support the core initiatives of Further Together: The Campaign for Our Third Century, a strategic effort to propel HWS into the future. The gift will be structured to maximize impact across three key areas:
- Access and Financial Aid: An endowed fund will provide need-based financial aid, supporting up to 100 scholarships of $10,000 each year.
- Innovation and Creativity: The Melly Strategic Innovation Fund will empower HWS leadership to address immediate needs and drive initiatives that enhance campus culture and professional development.
- Academic and Co-Curricular Expansion: Funding will bolster academic programs, faculty development, and strategic initiatives, including the creation of the Melly Institute for Business, Innovation, and Leadership.
Judy Melly expressed hope that their contribution will inspire others. “Being part of the Hobart and William Smith community has brought joy to both of our lives, and we are very happy to return that joy,” she said.
Melly, a 1952 graduate of Hobart, was a student-athlete before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and later building a distinguished career at Goldman Sachs. He joined the HWS Board of Trustees in 1981, serving as Chair for a decade and earning the title of Trustee Chair Emeritus—the only individual to hold that distinction. His past philanthropic efforts helped fund the Melly Academic Center, scholarships, and the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts.
“This gift is without precedent in our history and comes at a pivotal moment in higher education,” Gearan said. “It underscores the enduring impact of Tom and Judy’s vision and generosity, paving the way for a vibrant future for HWS. Their legacy will be felt for generations.”
