Cayuga County is rationing road salt due to a widespread supply shortage affecting New York and the Northeast. The legislature received an update from highway officials at a meeting this week, indicating that while the county’s stock of salt is enough for the coming days, deliveries have been delayed.
American Rock Salt, the main supplier, attributes the shortage to prolonged cold weather, noting that municipalities have already used as much salt in early 2025 as they did for the entire previous winter. The company has ramped up production by 25% to meet demand.
The towns of Palmyra and Canandaigua have recently announced steps being taken to address the salt shortage across the region.
