Binghamton firefighter killed in downtown blaze

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

A devastating fire in downtown Binghamton claimed the life of firefighter John Gaudet, 40, an 11-year veteran of the Binghamton Fire Department. Two other firefighters were injured but are in stable condition. The fire broke out Wednesday night on Main Street, and Gaudet was rushed to Wilson Hospital, where he later died.

Officials, including Mayor Jared Kraham and Fire Chief Alan Gardiner, mourned Gaudet’s loss, calling him a fearless and dedicated hero. Flags across Broome County were lowered, and community members placed flowers at the scene in tribute. The last line-of-duty death in the department was in 2013.

Authorities continue investigating the fire’s cause, with the Court Street bridge closed for cleanup. Gaudet, remembered for his leadership and sacrifice, previously played lacrosse at SUNY Cortland.
