Cayuga Legislature committee to address public health, social services programs

  • Staff Report

The Cayuga County Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee will meet on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. to discuss several important public health and social services initiatives. Chaired by Legislator Heidi Nightengale, the committee will consider resolutions that span improvements in healthcare, substance use support, and family services.

A key topic on the agenda includes a resolution to approve contracts for Board of Health hearing officers, who conduct administrative hearings for public health cases. The officers will be compensated at $50 per hearing, funded through state aid.

The committee will also vote on accepting $23,286 in performance incentive funding from the New York State Health Department. These funds are part of ongoing efforts to enhance local health services.

In social services matters, a proposed contract with ABC Cayuga Inc. would grant low-income families access to developmental play programs at the organization’s Play Space facility. The program would provide yearly memberships fully reimbursed for families earning below 200% of the poverty level.

Additionally, the committee will discuss allocating $23,918 in federal grant funding to enhance Adult Protective Services (APS). This funding aims to improve the county’s ability to investigate and prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults.

Other items include a contract with Cayuga Centers to secure respite beds for foster care and at-risk youth, as well as a proposal to create a full-time Coordinator of Substance Use Initiatives. This new role would oversee various grant-funded programs to combat substance use disorders in the county.

The meeting will take place at the Cayuga County Office Building and will be open to the public.
