Winter Weather Advisory posted: Plowable snow will impact travel tonight, early-Sunday

  • Staff Report

It’s going to be a wintry second half of the weekend for people in the Finger Lakes, as the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the entire region. The advisory, which remains in effect from 4 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Sunday, warns of snow accumulations ranging from 3 to 7 inches, along with a light glaze of ice.

According to the NWS, snow is expected to begin later this afternoon, intensifying during the evening hours. The heaviest snowfall rates—potentially reaching up to one inch per hour—will likely occur overnight, creating hazardous road conditions with reduced visibility.

Officials are urging drivers to slow down and exercise caution as roads become slippery and visibility deteriorates. Areas across Northern and Southern Cayuga, Seneca Falls, Canandaigua, Penn Yan, and other parts of the region are expected to face some of the storm’s greatest impacts during the peak hours of snow accumulation.

Additionally, the advisory highlights the possibility of mixed precipitation in some parts of the region, including freezing rain that could lead to icy patches on roadways. The storm system moving into the area is part of a broader weather pattern affecting much of central and western New York.

Local authorities and emergency services are prepared for an uptick in calls related to weather-induced accidents and travel disruptions. Residents are encouraged to report snow conditions through official NWS channels and social media to assist in tracking the storm’s progress.

Snow showers are forecast to taper off early Sunday morning, with intermittent lake-effect snow possibly continuing into the afternoon in areas southeast of the Great Lakes. Forecasters have indicated that additional light accumulations may occur on Sunday, particularly in areas influenced by lake-effect conditions.
