Geneva school district capital project passes with overwhelming support

The Geneva City School District’s $33.6 million capital project has been approved by more than 81 percent of voters. Residents cast their ballots on Feb. 6, with 423 in favor and 94 opposed.

Superintendent Bo Wright expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “This project will allow us to make important security and safety improvements to our buildings, as well as complete necessary maintenance upgrades,” he said.

All four district schools, along with Central Services, are slated for renovations. North Street School will undergo $6.2 million in improvements, West Street School $4.9 million, the Middle/High School $10.4 million, and Central Services over $4.2 million. An additional $8 million has been allocated for unexpected expenses.

The upgrades prioritize school safety, including securing windows and doors, and improving traffic flow around West Street School by adding a new car traffic loop for parent drop-off and pickup. Another key feature is the enhancement of electrical infrastructure to support future electric bus-charging stations, as the district must fully transition to electric buses by 2035.

Superintendent Wright emphasized that the project will have no tax impact. The district’s state building aid is projected to cover approximately 90 percent of costs, with the capital reserve fund covering the remainder.

Planning for the project is set to begin later this year, followed by bidding in early 2026. Construction is scheduled to start in April 2026, with completion expected by August 2027.
