It took until February 5, but Pete Alonso has finally signed with a team, and he is staying in Queens.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Wednesday night that Alonso has agreed to return to the New York Mets on a two-year $54 million contract with a $24 million player option for 2026. The 30-year-old slugger will receive a $10 million signing bonus and will earn $30 million in 2025.
This deal comes after Alonso turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension in the summer of 2023.
Alonso has hit 226 home runs since making his Major League debut in 2019, the second-most in baseball, trailing only Aaron Judge’s 232. He is also just 27 homers away from passing Daryl Strawberry on the Mets’ all-time home run list. He is a career .249/.339/.514 hitter and has started at first base for 846 of the 870 games the Mets have played since he was promoted to the big leagues.
The Mets have now added or retained the following players this winter: Alonso, Juan Soto, Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, Jesse Winker, A.J. Minter, Ryne Stanek, José Siri, and Nick Madrigal.
