The city of Ithaca will discuss reaffirming its sanctuary city designation during tonight’s Common Council meeting. The proposal emphasizes the city’s commitment to protecting the rights of migrants, reproductive care, and gender-affirming healthcare.
Adopted in 2017, the sanctuary status prevents Ithaca from assisting in federal immigration enforcement. A 2022 ordinance reinforced this stance, promoting inclusivity regardless of citizenship status.
The move comes as political pressure grows. In September, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump vowed to push legislation banning sanctuary cities. Residents can view tonight’s discussion live on Ithaca’s YouTube page.
