Supportive texts from partners ease stress

New Cornell research shows that receiving simple, supportive texts from romantic partners can improve mood and reduce negativity during stressful events, such as exams. Messages as brief as “Good luck” significantly boosted students’ emotions compared to no message or texts from strangers.

The study, led by Professor Vivian Zayas, found that the emotional benefits didn’t depend on the length or content of the text, emphasizing that just knowing someone cares makes a difference.

Researchers believe similar effects could occur with messages from trusted confidantes like friends or family.
