Former Waterloo mayor Kenneth Lee Patchen dies at 84

Kenneth Lee Patchen, Jr., who served as mayor of Waterloo for two decades, passed away on Tuesday, January 28. He was 84 years old. Patchen, a lifelong advocate for his community, died at Huntington Living Center in Waterloo.

Patchen, born on November 16, 1940, in Geneva, NY, graduated from Waterloo High School in 1958 before attending Auburn Community College and RIT. His early career included service in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1958 to 1961 and work with W.F. Humphrey Press in Geneva. He later established Patchen Real Estate in 1972, building a successful business and cementing his reputation as a pillar of the community.


During his tenure as mayor, Patchen was known for his dedication to public service and community development. He was also actively involved in local organizations, including the Rotary and Lions Club, and remained a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Patchen is survived by his children Christine Garafalo and Timothy Patchen of Seneca Falls, and Patrick Patchen of Fayetteville. He leaves behind six grandchildren and his brother Maurice C. Patchen of Ontario, Canada, along with other extended family. His wife, Connie Patchen, and his sister, Kathleen King, preceded him in death.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, February 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Coe-Genung Funeral Home, located at 46 W. Main St. in Waterloo. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 35 Center St. The service will be officiated by Fr. Jim Fennessy. A spring burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Waterloo.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Memorial Day Museum or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, both located in Waterloo.
