Recovery operations intensified on Friday as police boats searched the Potomac River following a midair collision near Reagan National Airport that claimed 67 lives. The crash is the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster since 2001.
Authorities have recovered 41 bodies and the black boxes from the American Airlines plane, while efforts to retrieve the helicopter’s recorder continue. The collision occurred Wednesday when a Black Hawk helicopter allegedly exceeded its altitude limit and crossed into the path of a passenger jet.
The crash has led to temporary airspace restrictions for helicopters around the airport, which is operating at reduced capacity as investigations proceed.
