Why you shouldn’t prop windshield wipers in winter

Propping your windshield wipers in winter can do more harm than good, according to automotive experts.

The tension spring can weaken or bend, and ice buildup on raised wipers may cause damage to their motor parts.

Instead, leave wipers down and use your defroster to melt ice. This comes in contrast to what many Upstate New Yorkers do when snow or ice is in the forecast.

Additionally, always turn off wipers when done to avoid straining or breaking joints if they’re frozen when the car starts.
