The Yates County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving an individual impersonating a deputy and threatening citizens with arrest unless they pay money or click on a link.
According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, the caller uses a phone application to disguise their number, causing it to appear as if the call is originating from the Yates County Sheriff. The scammer claims there is a warrant for the recipient’s arrest and demands payment to resolve the issue.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that this is a scam and urged residents not to send money or click on any suspicious links. Law enforcement does not threaten arrest as a means to collect payment or resolve warrants.
