Trump declares national emergency at southern border to address immigration crisis

President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order Wednesday declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, citing record levels of illegal immigration, human trafficking, and drug smuggling as the basis for immediate action.

The declaration, issued under the National Emergencies Act, authorizes the deployment of additional Armed Forces and National Guard personnel to the border. It also directs the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security to complete construction of the border wall and enhance operational capabilities, including air missions near the border.

“Illegal immigration affects the lives of all Americans,” Trump said, echoing prior statements. “It burdens taxpayers, endangers communities, and undermines public safety.”

The move follows a four-year period of unprecedented border activity, with 8.72 million encounters reported from FY2021 to FY2024. Officials also highlighted the trafficking of over 550,000 unaccompanied children and the deadly influx of fentanyl, which killed an estimated 75,000 Americans in 2023, making it the leading cause of death for adults aged 18-45.

Trump criticized past federal efforts, stating that states like Texas were hindered when attempting to secure their borders. He pointed to the emergency as essential to combating organized crime, including gangs like Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, and preventing tragedies such as the murders of Americans allegedly linked to border security failures.

This order builds on Trump’s previous declaration of a border emergency in 2019, which he credited with reducing illegal crossings. It also fulfills a 2024 campaign promise to use military resources to secure the border and combat cartels.

“This Executive Order will allow the government to gain operational control of the border, combat the cartels, and secure our nation,” Trump stated.

The administration faces expected legal and political challenges to the order, as debates over the scope of executive authority on immigration continue.
