Seneca County health officials are urging residents to exercise caution after structure fires in the Village of Ovid. While the flames have been extinguished, the Health Department is emphasizing the lingering dangers posed by soot, smoke, and fire-related debris.
Public Health Director Scott King warned of potential health risks, including smoke inhalation and exposure to hazardous substances in burnt materials and fire residue. Residents are advised against eating, drinking, or breathing anything exposed to the flames, smoke, or water used to extinguish the fire.
“Even after the visible smoke is gone, smoke-damaged materials can release harmful chemicals into the air,” the department noted in its statement. Individuals experiencing symptoms like coughing, nosebleeds, or breathing difficulties are urged to contact their healthcare providers immediately.

The department provided detailed guidance on cleaning and sanitizing affected spaces, emphasizing the importance of proper ventilation and protective gear. Residents are advised to avoid vacuuming soot-covered surfaces and instead use damp cloths and mops to clean up safely.
Donation drop-off sites have been established to aid those affected by the fires. Contributions can be made at Community Bank in Ovid, Lodi Whittier Library in Lodi, Ovid Federated Church in Ovid, and Interlaken Public Library in Interlaken.
