Christ Church Rochester will offer its sanctuary as a space for reflection and community gatherings during pivotal moments tied to the White House transition. The Episcopal church, located at 141 East Avenue, invites the public to participate in two special events on January 20 and 21.
The first event, “Do Not Look Away,” commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the presidential inauguration on January 20. At 6 p.m., local conductor and musician Rebecca Bryant Novak will perform Yoko Ono’s “Cut Piece,” followed by a community rendition of Pauline Oliveros’ participatory choral work, “The Tuning Meditation.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and donations will be collected for NOIRE House, a local organization. A tea and discussion will follow the performance.
On January 21, marking the first day of the new White House administration, the church will host an “Open Sanctuary” event from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Grace Browning, a harpist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform during the quiet reflection time. Attendees can use the space for prayer or contemplation, with no formal program or tickets required.
“Everyone is welcome to come and find solace in this space during what is often a reflective and transitional time for the nation,” said organizers.
