Auburn Police Chief James Slayton was honored at the Auburn City Council meeting this week as he prepared to retire after 27 years of service to the city. Chief Slayton’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished career dedicated to public safety and community service.

Slayton joined the Auburn Police Department in 1998 and steadily rose through the ranks, earning a promotion to lieutenant in 2016 before being named chief of police in 2021. His leadership has been praised for fostering strong ties between the department and the community.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office joined in celebrating Slayton’s career, thanking him for his service and wishing him well in retirement. “We wish you and your family all the best as you start your next chapter,” the office wrote in a statement.
Chief Slayton worked his final shift on Friday, marking the conclusion of a career that left a lasting impact on both his department and the city of Auburn.
