Gillibrand calls for stronger state-federal cooperation to address climate threats

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is urging enhanced collaboration between federal and state agencies to prepare New York for the increasing risks of wildfires and climate-related disasters. During a virtual press conference on Thursday, Gillibrand highlighted the importance of proactively equipping New York with the resources and strategies necessary to combat these challenges.

“While New York has so far been spared severe destruction from wildfires, these types of disasters are becoming increasingly common across the East Coast,” Gillibrand said. “As our climate crisis worsens, we must be prepared. I am committed to delivering any necessary federal resources to help New York proactively prepare for wildfires and related threats.”

Gillibrand announced her plans to work closely with the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and the Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). Her focus includes supporting firefighter training, enhancing forest management, and expanding public education on fire safety.

In a letter to DHSES Commissioner Jackie Bray, Gillibrand requested a briefing on wildfire preparedness, including plans to address increasing fire threats, coordination with NYSDEC on climate-related impacts, and areas where federal support could bolster state efforts.

Recent events, such as California’s devastating wildfires and New York’s Jennings Creek Fire, underscore the urgency of proactive measures, Gillibrand noted. She emphasized the need for robust fire prevention programs that include forest management and technical assistance for communities.

Gillibrand’s efforts aim to prepare New York for the challenges posed by climate change, including drought-induced wildfires, flooding, and extreme weather. She reiterated her commitment to ensuring New York receives federal support to strengthen resilience and recovery efforts.

“I stand ready to assist in prevention and preparedness work,” she said, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding New Yorkers and their communities from future climate-related disasters.
