IRS announces start of 2025 tax season

Tax season officially begins Monday, January 27, when the IRS starts accepting 2024 tax returns. Early filers can use IRS Free File, available now for individuals with AGIs under $84,000. The IRS recommends e-filing with direct deposit for quicker refunds, typically processed within 21 days.

This year, expanded Direct File services are available in 25 states, featuring tools like live chat, data import, and new credit eligibility options. The IRS has also improved in-person and phone support and added online features such as scam alerts and draft-saving capabilities.

Refunds can no longer be used to purchase paper Series I savings bonds. Over 140 million returns are expected by the April 15 deadline, with many relying on trusted tax professionals for filing assistance.
