Are some headlights illegally bright?

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Blinding LED headlights are a common wintertime driving nuisance, and their legality depends on specific regulations. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while LED systems built into vehicles by manufacturers are allowed, replacing traditional headlamp bulbs with aftermarket LED bulbs is not federally approved.

This clarification comes from a 2024 letter by NHTSA’s Acting Chief Counsel, explaining that headlamp systems are regulated as a whole, including the lens, reflector, and light source. Replacement bulbs must meet precise standards, and non-compliant LEDs could violate federal law.

Drivers should be cautious about aftermarket LED upgrades, as improper installations may not only be illegal but could also compromise safety on the road.
