Casella Waste Services requires additional soil to cover waste at the Ontario County Landfill, set to close by December 31, 2028.
The current borrow area on Rilands Road is nearly depleted, prompting Casella to propose digging 40 feet deeper and altering the slope of the site. Alternatively, a new soil pit could be developed on nearby farmland, though it is deed-restricted for farming until 2028.
The Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on January 23 to discuss the proposals. Written comments can be submitted until 5 p.m. that day. The landfill closure follows a 2023 county decision to cease operations.
