The Upper New York Conference of the United Methodist Church announced a suspension of hosting and programming at Casowasco Camp & Retreat Center due to financial losses and declining attendance. The site faces a $1.2 million deficit, $2 million in deferred maintenance, and an 85% drop in campers since 2015, according to reporting this week by The Auburn Citizen.
Described as a “sabbath,” the suspension includes minimal staffing while church leaders assess future options. Despite the pause, they clarified there are no plans to close or sell the property.
The church aims to reimagine Casowasco’s role through community input, praying for a renewed vision that aligns with modern ministry needs while honoring its legacy.
