President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly weighing an executive order to safeguard gas-powered appliances, including stoves and heaters, from federal and local regulations aimed at phasing them out due to health and environmental concerns.
The move comes as Republican-led states push back against Democratic initiatives restricting gas appliances in new buildings, citing concerns over nitrogen oxide emissions linked to respiratory issues and climate change. Currently, 75 million U.S. households use natural gas appliances, with 47 million relying on gas stoves.
While some cities, like San Francisco and New York, have enacted gas bans, court rulings and state laws have limited their enforcement. Trump’s proposed order may mirror Congressional efforts to restrict funding for such regulations, positioning the issue as part of ongoing culture wars.
