A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet’s Tingri County, near Mount Everest, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130, according to Chinese authorities. The quake, felt across Nepal, Bhutan, and India, caused widespread destruction, collapsing over 1,000 homes and displacing thousands.
Rescue teams, including over 1,500 workers, have been deployed with essential supplies such as tents and bedding. Tremors triggered more than 150 aftershocks, further complicating recovery efforts in the high-altitude region. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for urgent relief measures.
The Dalai Lama expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, while safety concerns prompted China to close the Everest region to tourists. With Tibet prone to seismic activity, the disaster underscores the persistent vulnerability of the region to devastating earthquakes.
