Meta removed its AI-generated Instagram and Facebook character accounts following criticism from users who found them “creepy and unnecessary.” The controversy erupted after posts, including one from columnist Karen Attiah, highlighted problematic responses from an AI character named “Liv,” which raised concerns about representation and authenticity.
Users also reported difficulty blocking the AI accounts, which Meta attributed to a bug. In response, Meta disabled the accounts and restricted search results for their usernames.
Despite this move, Meta continues to allow user-generated AI chatbots on its platforms, with some gaining popularity, particularly AI “girlfriend” accounts.
