Young boy dies after falling through ice in Yates County

  • Staff Report

An 8-year-old boy has tragically died after falling through the ice on a pond in the Town of Milo, according to an update from the Yates County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency crews responded to the scene on December 29, where Penn Yan Fire Department personnel pulled the child from the freezing water and initiated CPR before transporting him to Soldiers and Sailors Hospital.

Despite extensive efforts by emergency responders and medical staff, the boy succumbed to his injuries late Sunday afternoon. Authorities have not released the child’s name as the investigation remains ongoing.

Officials continue to urge residents to exercise extreme caution around frozen bodies of water, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of ice, even in freezing conditions.
